Athletics

In addition to regular classes in Physical Education, students at St. Martin’s School enjoy a growing athletic program offering participation in a variety of sports. Teams are organized at several class levels and may compete in CYO or local area leagues. The program is operated on a volunteer basis and is open to all Parish children, as well as all St. Martin’s School students in the proper age groups

Athletic Mission Statement

The CYO sports program exists to provide opportunities for youth to develop strong moral character, positive self-worth, interpersonal competence, and a commitment to caring for others and their community through activities of a social, educational, and athletic nature based on Catholic values.

Purpose of CYO Sports

In CYO programs, emphasis rests not on the number of games won or lost, but on the participants' attitude in victory or defeat. Learning how to lose is just as important as learning how to win. Learning how to win graciously is more important than winning itself.

CYO programs serve the needs of all youth. They enable the gifted to excel, the less gifted to participate and improve. "Star" athletes and teams do not receive exclusive attention.

Principles of fair play and sportsmanship must govern every game. Dishonesty has no place in CYO competition. CYO competitors must not borrow from professional sports questionable techniques for winning at any cost.

All participants should have the respect of others on their own team and the opposing team. Competitors should regard the opposition as friends, not enemies.

CYO participants should have a spirit of loyalty to CYO ideals, to parish, to coach, and to the team. They should learn patience with and tolerance of those of less ability. They should feel grateful to all who make the CYO program happen. Speech and actions should reflect Catholic values.

Cross Country

St. Martin’s participates in Cross Country in the fall. Registration forms will be available at that time. Practices are generally held at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg.

Basketball

Every year we attempt to field six basketball teams. There are both boys and girls teams for U10, U12 and U14. U10 is eight to ten year olds, U12 is 11 and 12 year olds and U14 is 13 and 14 year olds. The cost for each team is determined in September based on the CYO team fee, number of players, and cost of uniform. Players can sign up for basketball either at the in-person session held in early October or by sending in a completed form through kiddie mail or email. Forms will be available in the fall.

Track and Field

The track team is open to all K-8 students. Our mission is dedicated to promoting fun, teaching fundamental skills, and developing an enjoyment of running. Teamwork and striving for personal improvement are emphasized. The track team competes in the CYO League, which holds several weekend meets throughout the season, culminating in a championship meet. If your child is a serious track athlete or never run in a formal track event, we have the appropriate level of competition for your athlete. Registration forms will be available in the spring.
