A Summer Blast at St. Martin’s
Throughout the school year, our students are immersed in environments that foster their education and contribute to their development. Come summer, camp offers another unique venue for growth, teaching students new skills, helping them to become independent and self-confident, and present opportunities for new friendships to form.
This summer, St. Martin’s teachers offered students six exciting weeks of camp, each with a different theme. Campers created castles and catapults, danced around a maypole, and engaged in pretend medieval sword fighting during Renaissance week. During Health and Movement week, they practiced first aid basics while making their own kits, whipped up healthy foods, and used their STEM minds to engineer an obstacle course. Students constructed miniature Ancient Wonders of the World, prepared food-truck treats, and took a walking tour through Olde Town Gaithersburg during Cityscape week. Each week, campers enjoyed an entertaining Thursday Morning Kids Concert at Gaithersburg’s City Hall Pavilion. Students who are new to SMS had a chance to get to know some teachers and form new friendships; for current students, relationships were strengthened.
Our campers had fun getting out of their comfort zone and taking some risks with their skills. Our parents appreciated camp as a distraction-free option, which allowed time for kids to kick the tires on a new interest. Our teachers hope to offer this incredible opportunity to learn new skills, have fun, and stretch campers’ imaginations again next year.
